Origins of the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)
Nintendo came into existence in 1889 as a producer and supplier of handmade playing cards. Skipping forward to the early 1970s, we come to what, in retrospect, was a defining moment in the evolution of Nintendo: the company’s release of the Nintendo Beam Gun, which was the very first electronic toy in Japan.
In 1980, Nintendo enjoyed considerable success in the arcade games industry, most notably with the classic title Donkey Kong. This success prompted Nintendo to enter the home video gaming market in 1983 with Nintendo (NES) games and consoles.
The worldwide release of the NES was a slow and difficult process, not reaching European, American and Australian markets until some 2 or 3 years after the initial Japanese release.
