The Sega Mega Drive — A Classic Game Console That Is Still Entertaining Kids & Adults Today

Do you remember playing the Sega Mega Drive game console? It was one of the classic game consoles many of us grew up with.

Believe it or not, this console is still entertaining today! In fact, there are many different ways to enjoy it — whether you’re a dedicated retro games fan yourself or you just want to relive some nostalgic memories. Keep reading to learn more about the Sega Mega Drive classic game console and how you can get your hands on one!

The edgy competitor that challenged Nintendo’s dominance

The Sega Mega Drive game console — known as the Sega Genesis in North America — was released in 1988, hot on the heels of its 8-bit older brother. It was a serious competitor in the 16-bit market, outshining and outselling contemporaries like the TurboGrafx-16 and the Neo Geo.

Indeed, as the console’s lifespan continued into the 1990s, the race between the Mega Drive and the Super Nintendo for dominance of the home console market would become known as the “Console Wars”.  Adherents on both sides threw barbs at each other in the press and on the playground alike — and although Nintendo would eventually win the day for sales, there was no question that the Mega Drive’s cultural impact was of a comparable scale.

In fact, that’s a big part of the reason it continues to have a great rapport with gamers to this day — the Sega Mega Drive is for all ages.

Sonic the Hedgehog

One of the most recognisable video game characters and mascots of all time, Sonic the Hedgehog remains just as popular as ever.

Created via a contest to design a company mascot similar to Mario from Nintendo, Naoto Ohshima submitted the ever-appealing blue blur to immediate success. Released in 1991, this game made the Sega Mega drive a classic game console that’ll never lose its appeal.

More than just nostalgia

The Sega Mega Drive is a classic game console that oozes style and has inspired countless modern 16-bit homages. Though the graphical leaps made in those days were innovative and still impressive to this day, the focus was always on creating the best gaming experience possible. The pixel art and animation holds up incredibly well, especially in comparison to contemporary 3-D titles.

Great lineup of classic arcade ports and innovative console games

Like any other classic console, the biggest draw of the Sega Mega Drive game console is its amazing lineup. From classic arcade ports to character-focused games, there’s something to love for gamers of all ages, including:

  • Sonic the Hedgehog series
  • Streets of Rage II
  • Aladdin
  • Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf

  • And many more!
